Nine Weaves

A handloom is a loom worked by hand and foot alone, with no power driving it. Everything these nine cloths are is decided by a weaver's own hands, one pick of the shuttle at a time.

What separates one tradition from another is rarely the loom. It is the knowledge held in a particular town or river valley: how the yarn is dyed before it is woven, how a border is joined to a body, which motif belongs on which cloth and which does not. That knowledge is taught inside families and workshops, over years, and it does not travel well. This is why every weave here is named for a place, and why the place is not a label on the cloth but a part of it.

Several of these weaves carry a Geographical Indication, a legal mark that ties the name to the place it comes from, so that a sari may be sold as Patan Patola or Kota Doria only if it was truly made there.

Double Ikat

Both warp and weft threads are resist dyed to the exact pattern before a single thread is woven. One sari can take up to a year.

Ikatइकत

The yarn is tied and dyed to the pattern before it ever reaches the loom, so a motif’s edges carry a soft, deliberate blur.

Zari Brocade

Gold and silver metal thread is woven directly into silk on a drawloom, a technique carried to Varanasi by weavers from Central Asia centuries ago.

Wild Tussar Silk

Tussar silk comes from wild, uncultivated silkworms and keeps its natural golden colour. It is rarely dyed, letting the fibre’s own sheen do the work.

Supplementary Weft

Each motif is added by hand, thread by thread, on the loom itself, not printed or embroidered after. The ground is so fine it is called woven air.

Korvai Weaving

Body and border are woven separately, often in contrasting colours, then interlocked thread by thread, a technique called korvai.

Bandha (Ikat)

Bandha means to tie. The yarn is bound and dyed section by section so the finished motif seems to float inside the fabric itself.

Reversible Border

Woven on the banks of the Narmada since the 18th century, its border is designed to look identical from both sides of the cloth.

Kota Doria

Khat Weave

Cotton and silk threads are woven together into small square checks called khat, giving the fabric its light, almost transparent quality.
